Name: Slow Art Day at the Remington Museum
Date: April 14, 2018
Event Description:

The Frederic Remington Art Museum will be joining hundreds of museums worldwide in hosting Slow Art Day on Saturday, April 14, 2018. This international event is a day for art appreciators of all ages to slow down and spend some quality time in deep conversation with original works of art. For Slow Art Day 2018, admission to the Remington Museum will be free of charge, and a range of programs and activities will be available to help visitors to explore and connect with individual works of art. Museum docents will be on hand throughout the day to offer tips for looking and to facilitate conversation.

Throughout the day, volunteer educators at the Remington Museum will be on hand to facilitate visitor interaction with Frederic Remington’s paintings, drawings, and sculptures. An “art cart” will be available with sketching materials for those who want to experience Remington’s work through drawing. “If you’ve never tried sketching in a museum or gallery before, you’ll probably be surprised by what it reveals about the artworks before you,” says Desmond. “Sketching is a perfect Slow Art Day activity, since it helps you to slow down and observe more deeply, and to understand new aspects of the artworks on display.”

For those looking for guided instruction in sketching, the Museum will offer a sketching class from 11am to 1pm in the Newell Galleries. Museum Education Specialist Laura Desmond will pair up with local artist Julie Pratt to introduce several works by Frederic Remington, then Pratt will provide instruction and advice for sketching from Remington's works in the Newell Galleries. All ranges of drawing experience are welcome. Drawing materials will be provided, though artists are welcome to bring their own sketchbooks and pencils if they prefer. The cost of the class is $15 for members of the Remington Museum and $25 for non-members. The class is limited to 12 participants. Call 315-393-2425 or email desmond@fredericremington.org to ask questions or sign up, or visit fredericremington.org to register online.

At 2pm the Museum will offer a special preview of its new One Hour One Work program, in which participants spend one hour viewing and reflecting with others on a single work of art. Volunteer educators will lead free One Hour One Work sessions on the following Remington paintings: An Old-Time Plains Fight, The Last March, Untitled (Fort Sill, I.T.), and Evening in the Desert. Navajoes. The program is free, but space is limited and reservations are required, in order to facilitate close looking and ease of conversation. To learn more and register, visit fredericremington.org or contact Laura Desmond at 315-393-2425 or desmond@fredericremington.org.
