About the Presenters:
Karen Kus-Misiak is an Assistant Director in Career Services in the Lougheed Center for Applied Learning at SUNY Potsdam. She specializes in curriculum development, and facilitating career and academic planning for students and alumni to be effectively equipped for their career trajectory. At Potsdam, she has piloted and currently leads a series of programming initiatives and oversees a team of Peer Advisors. She teaches career courses and conducts research on campus assessment, with a primary focus on strategically integrating academic affairs with Career Services.
She has a background in teaching Women and Gender Studies as a former Adjunct Professor at both St. Lawrence University and the University of Toronto Mississauga. Karen has taught a number of courses in topics ranging from feminist theory, to women in families, to a gender studies practicum. She aims to apply her professional and academic background in feminism and social justice critical theories through mindful application of inclusivity, diversity and an intersectional lens toward her advising practices. 

Karen graduated with a Master of Education, Adult Education and Community Development at OISE, University of Toronto. She is currently working towards her second Masters in Higher Education Administration at Stoney Brook University. Currently, she sits on the Board of Directors for North Country Women’s Leadership Initiative. Beyond her professional life, Karen is a ballroom dancer, a yoga enthusiast and enjoys self-education on holistic medicine.


Toby is currently the Director of Experiential Education, an office located in the Lougheed Center for Applied Learning at SUNY Potsdam. Toby has been working with students seeking Applied Learning activities for over 20 years.  Toby is also an alum of SUNY Potsdam, class of 1989, with a major in Psychology.  Toby also holds a Masters Degree in Counseling and Human Development from St. Lawrence University. In addition to working as a Career Counselor at SUNY Potsdam, Toby is an Academic Advisor, Internship Faculty Sponsor, and is a past President of the SUNY Career Development Organization (SUNY CDO).  In Toby’s spare time, he enjoys spending time with his wife Kathy and three children, playing golf, working out, and playing drums.
